A PRAGMATIC ANALYSIS OF ILLOCUTIONARY ACTS IN THE MOVIE "THE SOCIAL NETWORK"

Permana Andhika Kusuma - Nama Orang; Hanung Triyoko - Nama Orang;

This study investigates the illocutionary acts performed by characters in the film "The Social Network" through the lens of Searle’s speech act theory. Focusing on the pragmatic analysis of dialogue, the study aims to identify the types of illocutionary acts present and examine the contexts in which they occur. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, focusing on an in-depth exploration and strighforward with description of the selected conversations in the film. This approach allowed for rich , detailed understanding of the content without imposing preconceived theories or frameworks. Data were collected through careful observation and transcription of the dialogues, enabling the identification of key themes and patterns that reflecte the characters “interactions and underlying messages. The qualitative descriptive method is particurarly suited for studies aiming to provide a comprehensive summary of specific phenomena in their natural context, ensuring clarity and accuracy in presenting the findings. The analysis reveals that assertives and directives are the most dominant illocutionary acts, reflecting the film’s emphasis on argumentation, persuasion, and negotiation. Commissives, expressives, and declarations also appear, particularly in moments of conflict, emotional expression, or significant narrative shifts. The findings highlight the importance of context, speaker intention, and social dynamics in interpreting illocutionary force. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that Searle’s framework is effective for uncovering the pragmatic functions of film dialogue and contributes to a deeper understanding of character relationships and narrative development. It is suggested that future research expand to other films or genres and consider additional pragmatic elements to enrich the analysis of cinematic discourse.
