GRAMMATICAL PATTERNS IN CONVERSATIONS BETWEEN THE TEACHER AND STUDENTS IN THE INTERNATIONAL CLASS PROGRAMOF EIGHT STUDENTS AT SMP MUHAMMADIYAH PLUS SALATIGA

This study investigates the grammatical patterns and internal relations found in English conversations between teachers and 8th-grade students in the International Class Program at SMP Muhammadiyah Plus Salatiga. Using a qualitative descriptive design, the data were collected through classroom observation, audio/video recordings, transcripts, and field notes. The analysis employed Halliday & Matthiessen’s functional grammar and Creswell’s qualitative methodology to examine both syntactic structures and social contexts. The findings reveal that simple sentences are the most frequently used structure, especially in imperative and interrogative forms for classroom management and instruction. Teachers commonly utilize compound and complex sentences to deliver explanations and guidance. The study also identifies the consistent use of subject-verb agreement, cohesive devices, clause combinations, and modal auxiliaries, which contribute to coherence and meaning in classroom discourse. Additionally, the pragmatic use of politeness markers and sentence variety reflects the speakers’ awareness of their roles and communicative goals. This study emphasizes the importance of understanding grammatical patterns as tools for constructing interaction, supporting student engagement, and enhancing the effectiveness of English language learning in international classroom settings.
