ANALYZING POLITENESS STRATEGIES IN INTERNATIONAL CLASS PROGRAM (ICP) ENGLISH TEXTBOOK OF SMP MUHAMMADIYAH PLUS SALATIGA

This research, using qualitative methods and analysis of politeness strategies by Brown & Levinson (1987), aims to analyze, identify, and explore various politeness strategies in the textbook used at International Class Program (ICP) SMP Muhammadiyah Plus Salatiga entitled Ellevate Teen English Package level 1 by McGraw-Hill. Data was collected using documentation according to Creswell (2013) and analyzed qualitative interpretative according to Denzin and Lincoln (2018). The research results show that the book uses politeness strategies by considering who is talking to and the context of the conversation. This analysis identified 12 units containing 51 types conversations, totaling 121 sentences. The data shows that negative politeness is 73 (60,4%), positive politeness is 39 (32,2%), bald on record is 9 (7,4%), and off record is 0. The analyzed data found the informal is 47, formal is 1, semi-formal is 2, and informal that turned into an informal is 1. It was also found that there were 8 conversations taking place at school, 3 at home, 6 on the street, 1 in the library, 1 in the shop, and 28 that were not known for sure (could have happened in the park, study room, home or another place). The relationship between interactions was found. Namely, there were 33 conversations with friends, 7 with family, 7 with random people, 1 between friends and librarians, 2 with students and teachers, and 1 with customers and sales. Implications of this research for English Language Learners: Understanding Pragmatics and politeness strategies in English, Practical Applications, and the context of their use.
