The Use of English Songs as a Media in Vocabulary Learning as Part of Autonomous English Learning

This study aims to find out (1) students’ perceptions of the use of English songs as a media in vocabulary learning autonomously and (2) the factors that influence the selection of songs as a media for learning vocabulary autonomously. This study was conducted on English Education Department students at UIN Salatiga on 18-21st February, 2025. This study is qualitative research with case study approach. The in-depth interview is used in this study to collect data. The data were analyzed by using source triangulation. There were voluntarily seven participants in this study who have used or using English songs as their vocabulary learning media in autonomous learning. The result of this study is that they felt that English songs can improve their vocabulary acquisition by gaining new vocabularies such as adjective, noun, and verb. They also satisfied using English songs as they media for learning vocabulary autonomously. They felt that English songs can be a good media in learning vocabulary autonomously. Then, the common factors that influence the selection of songs as a media to learn vocabulary autonomously are song is a fun learning media, flexible, easy-to-understand, familiar media for students, and the number of new vocabularies for them that are contained in the song.
