THE USE OF THE CAKE APPLICATION AS A TOOL TO LEARN SPEAKING THROUGH AUTONOMOUS LEARNING (A Descriptive Qualitative Research of The Fifth Semester Students of the English Education Department of UIN Salatiga in the Academic Year 2024/2025)

Counselor: Noor Malihah, M.Hum., Ph.D. This research aims to investigate the use of the CAKE application as a tools to support speaking skill development through autonomous learning. The objectives of this study are: (1) to identify the features of the CAKE application that assist students in learning to speak, (2) to analyze how students recognize the aspects of speaking comprehension available in the application, and (3) to describe how students independently utilize the CAKE application to enhance their speaking ability. The research used a descriptive qualitative method, with data obtained through semi-structured interviews conducted with five fifth-semester students of the English Education Department at UIN Salatiga. The participants were chosen using purposive sampling to ensure relevance to the research focus. The findings reveal that the CAKE application offers several useful features for autonomous speaking practice. These include daily expression videos, mimicry practices with native speakers, subtitled videos with highlighted keywords, record-and-compare functions, and consistent learning reminders. Such features help students identify key elements in speaking skills such as pronunciation, intonation, fluency, vocabulary usage, and listening/responding abilities. Through regular exposure to real-life expressions and interactive speaking exercises, students are able to build their speaking competence more independently and confidently. Moreover, the study found that students apply autonomous learning strategies while using CAKE by setting personal goals, choosing relevant materials, managing their study time, selecting appropriate learning methods, conducting self-assessment, and maintaining internal motivation. These practices demonstrate how the CAKE application supports learners in becoming more responsible and self-directed in their language development. Therefore, CAKE can be considered an effective digital tool for promoting speaking skill improvement in an autonomous learning environment.
