The purpose of this study was to determine how Instant Message Application of WhatsApp is used in the Literal Reading and Writing Class in English learning process, what obstacles students experience when using WhatsApp as a learning medium, and the way literal reading and writing class students in UIN Salatiga overcome obstacles when using WhatsApp as a medium for learning English. This study uses a qualitative approach. Data sources in this study include the results of interviews with seven Literal Reading and Writing Class students of the English Education Department in UIN Salatiga. This data collection was carried out by conducting interviews and observations. The results of this study indicate that Instant Message Application of WhatsApp is less effective as the main medium for learning, but more effective as a supporting medium. This study examines students' perception of the use of WhatsApp in the learning English, the obstacles faced (such as lack of understanding of the material, signal problems, storage management, and notification disturbances), and how students overcome these obstacles. Despite its shortcomings, students consider WhatsApp flexible for discussion and delivery of materials, and it has features that support independent learning.
