Correlation Between Students' Interest in Reading and Ability to Read Comprehensions of Recount Texts in Phase D (Grade VIII) Students of MTS Sa AL-IDRUS

This study is to determine the level of students’ interest in reading Recount texts among Phase D (Grade VIII) students at MTS SA AL-IDRUS, to analyze the relationship between students’ interest in reading and their ability to comprehend Recount texts at MTS SA AL-IDRUS, and to identify whether there is a significant relationship between reading interest and reading comprehension ability of Recount texts among Phase D (Grade VIII) students at MTS SA AL-IDRUS. The type of research used is a quantitative approach with a correlation method. There are two variables in this study. Interest in reading is the independent variable, and ability to read comprehensions of recount text is the dependent variable. The research design used questionnaires, multiple-choice questions, and documentation. The sample is the population or can be called the total sample. The population used in this study was the entire grade VIII (Phase D), with a total of 47 students, and all were sampled. In collecting data, the research used a questionnaire to analyze students’ interest in reading, as well as a multiple-choice test to measure the ability to read comprehensions of a recount text. From the result, it was found that the mean of the scores of students’ interest in reading is 55.79. The mean of the score of students’ ability to read comprehension of the recount text test is 69.02. From the result of the correlation calculation by SPSS 25, it can be seen that the value of correlation is 0.025, which is interpreted as a negative correlation at a low level. In addition, the hypothesis Ho is accepted, there is no significant correlation between students’ interest in reading and ability to read comprehensions of recount text at the eighth-grade or (Phase D), students of MTS Sa Al-Idrus.
